We Are Gay And We Love Football Too
Earlier in the summer I took part in a BBC documentary, ‘We Are Gay And We Love Football Too’, with my football team – the London Titans. What makes our team special enough to warrant a BBC documentary? We are an LGBT football team and the programme documented our 5-a-side match against a straight ‘lads’ team. It comes at a time where the issue of homosexuality in the men’s game is becoming a bigger and bigger issue, as there has still not been an ‘out’ player in the professional game since Justin Fashnau (over twenty years ago). The result of his coming out sadly led to his suicide. Times are slowly changing as more clubs take part in campaigns aimed at kicking homophobia out of the sport. A number of professionals within the sport, including referee Ryan Atkin, have now come out. Is gay banter just that, banter? Or is it simply homophobia and something that the sport must rid itself of?
