TCS, NABS and Mental Health Awareness Week
Over the last few years, there has been a growing conversation around mental health. With the help of technology, social media and well-known public figures, more people are thinking about their attitudes towards mental health, and challenging the stigma surrounding it.
At TCS, we understand the importance of mental health and looking after one another, so it made perfect sense for us to become a partner of NABS.
NABS is a non-profit organisation that helps to improve the wellbeing of people working in the advertising and media industry. They offer expert, impartial and friendly advice. Whether it’s general career guidance, or having a chat about more personal issues, NABS’ mission is to be there for you.
As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, NABS brought people together with a series of events on the importance of mental wellbeing.
Professor Tanya Byron, one of the leading voices on mental health in the UK, kicked off the first event on ‘The face of Mental Health in 2018’. She touched on issues facing many (particularly young) people today, like the pressure to excel at everything and the fear of failing. She also spoke about rational thinking vs emotional thinking, noting that we can sometimes focus too much on the emotional side of our brain.
The main take out message from this talk was “you don’t have to believe everything you think”. We can often listen too much to our internal dialogue that says “you’re a failure, you’re ugly, you’re not good enough”. Instead we need to learn to navigate our heads and find a good balance between the rational and the emotional. We also need to maintain our mental health by giving our brain a break and by engaging in exercise.
Most importantly, if you have any worries about your mental health, NABS’ advice line is open to anyone in ad land. If you’d like help and are in need of a confidential chat, give them a call on 0800 707 6607 or email email@example.com.
