Ad of the Week – Winter Olympics

A friend of mine shared an ad for the Winter Olympics on Facebook, which demonstrates the continuous love and support that mums give their young Olympians. The ad thanks them for picking their children back up each time they fall during their competition journey. I didn’t realise until I looked it up, but it’s actually Procter & Gamble Bulgaria’s ad from the 2014 games, with the theme ‘Thank You, Mom’ and the hashtag #BecauseOfMom.

When searching for it, I found this year’s ad – which is also very emotive. It depicts mothers helping their young Olympians cope with challenges throughout training – whether it be bullying for the sport they participate in, or having less money than their peers. With the continuous support from their mothers, this story ends with the sentiment #LoveOverBias.

I’ve previously written about P&G’s commercial which aired before Christmas, thanking midwives for their hard work in 2017.

These ads suggest P&G’s creative strategy is to try and build an emotional connection with their consumers. I believe many adults can relate to the situations shown – being parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, elder siblings, or through memories and nostalgia of their own childhood. It also reminds viewers of the incredible dedication and commitment these athletes (and their families) give to their sport, and how far they’ve come to get to professional competition stage.
