Ad of the Week – Groupon
It was the Super Bowl this weekend, so that could only mean two things for those like me who don’t know the first thing about American football:
1) Half time music
2) Impressive celeb-fronted ad campaigns
While Justin Timberlake’s half time antics proved largely underwhelming, the ads this year did not disappoint!
Groupon’s ad in the fourth quarter of the game particularly caught my attention. It featured comedian Tiffany Haddish, who I first noticed in a Jimmy Kimmel interview promoting the film Girls Trip. In the interview she tells a hilarious story about taking co-star Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith on a Groupon swamp tour.
Groupon linking up with Haddish is a natural partnership, and a great example of how to turn a good PR story into a comprehensive ad campaign. The 30 second commercial also referred to how Groupon supports family-owned local businesses – no doubt a powerful message during an event with an estimated total ad spend of $414 million.
